Times change by session, and the enrollment page has this week's. Classes after 10 p.m. end after midnight on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

What we practice

Pads, bags and the clinch

The three things most classes are built around, explained plainly.

  • A coach holding focus mitts for an adult in a sparring stance, seen from the side

    Pad work

A coach holds the pads and calls a combination. You throw punches, kicks, knees and elbows at the pads, a round at a time, and the coach fixes your stance and timing between rounds.

  • Six adults hitting heavy bags in a row in a daylight gym

    Heavy bag

Rounds on the bag with your hands wrapped, a coach walking the line to adjust your footwork, and a minute to breathe between rounds.

  • Two adults in headgear circling in a slow technical sparring round

    Clinch

The clinch is the close range where you hold your partner and work knees and balance. We drill it slowly with a partner first, and contact stays light until your coach says otherwise.

  • “I work nights, so a class that starts at eleven is the reason I train at all. The coaches are patient with beginners.”

    Bret L.
  • “My first class, someone showed me how to wrap my hands and where to stand. I left tired and wanting the next one.”

    Marlo W.
  • “The clinch looked confusing until we drilled it slowly with a partner. Nobody rushed me.”

FAQ

Questions before your first class

How old do I have to be?

Adult classes are for ages 18 and up, and the teens' class is for ages 13 to 17. We don't have classes for younger children.

Can I watch a class first?

Yes. Ask the front desk, then sit on the bench beside it; watchers stay off the mat and keep phones on silent.

What do I wear to the first class?

A plain t-shirt or rash guard and shorts without pockets, no jewelry and no shoes on the mat. Bring water and a towel. We lend gloves and shin guards for your first classes.

What is a class like?

A warm-up, rounds of pad work or bag work with a coach, a technique you drill with a partner, a short conditioning block and a cool-down. Every class is built so a beginner and a regular can work side by side.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

No. All fitness levels start here, and the coach scales each round to you. A class is a workout that is also a class.

How does sparring start, and what does contact level mean?

Sparring starts as technical sparring at light contact, in gloves and shin guards, with a coach choosing partners. Light contact means touching, not hitting. Nobody spars in a first class, and you decide when you are ready.

Your first class is a good time to ask us anything. We'll lend you gloves and shin guards.
